STEVE DAVIS RAISES MONEY FOR ' PRECIOUS LIVES APPEAL'
( Saturday 7th June 2008 )

Six times world champion Steve Davis returned to Cornwall on Saturday 7th June, in a charity snooker exhibition, to show the Cornish audience that he is still at the top of snookers entertainment.

Saturday’s exhibition saw Steve play three selected players from the local area which included SnookerPlus promoter David Grigg.  The forth frame saw Simon Parmenter win the auction frame for £155 but Steve was in fine form with a break of 103.  At a previous Precious Lives Appeal Auction evening organised by RNAS Culdrose, Carole and David Grigg of SnookerPlus, donated a FRAME OF SNOOKER TO PLAY Steve Davis.  The winner, Jackie Phillips, made a gallant effort but Steve won the frame 81 -22.

In the second half, with a change to the scheduled evening’s format, Steve, disappointed that previous auction winner Simon did not get a chance to pot any balls, invited Simon to play another frame of snooker.  Simon scored the most points of any amateur on the evening scoring 51 points to Steve’s 69.

The audience, keen to support the charity aspect of the evening, helped raise over £380 purchasing programmes and raffle tickets.

A surprise donation from Steve meant that a large, framed picture of himself was auctioned and raised a further £100 for the charity.  In addition to this there was a lucky programme draw which Andrew Gooch won to receive a signed cue and case from Steve.

The evening continued with the audience being entertained with trick shots and hilarious stories of Steve’s experiences on the snooker circuit over his professional career.  A thoroughly fun packed evening was had by all.

When asked if Steve would return to Cornwall Steve said, “When you know you  will be treated so well, that you are coming to an excellent venue and be welcomed so warmly by the audience, yes of course I would love to return to Cornwall in the near future.”

The evening was a total success and raised over £2500 for the Precious Lives Appeal.  Carole and David Grigg, promoters, would like to thank everyone who supported the event, giving their time, donations and support.

The Rotary Club of St Austell organised the raffle and their support on the evening was invaluable.  This event was sponsored by Hawkins Motors, who produced the programmes for the evening and Furniture World.

Michaela travelled from Dunfermline in Scotland to referee the exhibition matches.  Michaela's parents used to live in Roche until they moved away from Cornwall many years ago, but she still has family living in the village.

Steve displayed his skills on the green baize against talented local players. He kept the audience entertained throughout with his banter with Michaela and the local players and involved audience members in his jokes.

Steve commented: "It seems a long time since I've been to
Cornwall.

"I have many happy memories of my exhibitions in Breage, near Helston, and St Ives, so it's really great to be back.

"It's great playing these exhibitions - world tournaments are serious stuff, you have to focus and put practice into the events. These exhibitions are great fun.  Everyone can have a bit of fun when they come to see me play."

Steve entertained the audience with his trick shots and his sense of humour.  At the end of the evening everyone had the opportunity to meet Steve and Michaela for photographs and autographs.
